Before ferret keeping becomes
your passion, there are a few basic things to first consider:
Ferrets, like skunks, are able to produce musk. In some
Countries of the World you are allowed to remove the musk
producing glands so they don't smell quite so much, but in
Countries like here in the UK or Australia this is not really
necessary.
You will find that the fur of a ferret is shiny and smooth to
the touch. This is because of the natural oils that they
produce. If you bathe your ferret regularly you will remove some
of these oils, which is really not a good thing for your pets
health. Ferrets also grow long nails, so regular nail cutting
sessions will be in necessary for ferret owners.
There are many different colours and breeds of ferret available.
Breeding them can be quite easy, especially when the ferret is
mated with a pole cat. (This was often done in ancient times).
The younger your ferret is, the more difficult it will be to
look after. Bear this in mind when making your choices. But then
if you obtain one that is still a kit, you will have the
advantage of training it from a very young age.
As ferrets grow older, it is undeniable that they will need the
company of other ferrets. Older ferrets will very often form a
"pecking order" and display superiority over younger
ferrets. Ferrets also have the tendency to develop very close,
almost family like cliques and may not be as open to accept new
ferrets in their circle easily. Fortunately, here at www.ferret-hammock.com
we have many products to help make things easier for you,
especially in the book section, that includes a comprehensive
store of books to allow you to get the best out of your
relationship with your ferret.
